Iowa's Surprising 2020 Derecho: What Have Meteorologists Learned? (Opens in new tab/window)
Great Hall, Memorial UnionLectures ProgramAdditional details
Speaker: William Gallus
2026 Spring Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Lecture
This lecture will look back at the infamous August 10, 2020, derecho that became the costliest thunderstorm event in United States history, discuss why the weather forecasts of that event were poor, and what research has shown regarding our ability to improve forecasts of extreme derechos like this. Besides its price tag of $12 billion dollars, the August derecho was unique in how intense the winds became and how long they lasted at the locations impacted by the storm. State-of-the-art numerical model simulations will show why the intensity and longevity of the winds were so unusual. Additional model runs that alter the atmosphere to account for the changing climate will be used to provide an idea of how climate change might impact derechos in the future.William Gallus is a professor of meteorology, having served at Iowa State for 25 years. His research interests include improved understanding and prediction of thunderstorm systems, their evolution, rainfall, and severe weather, as well as prediction of winds for wind energy. He also looks at how climate change might impact extreme weather events.
This lecture recording can be found on the Available Recordings page approximately two business days after the event and will remain accessible for three weeks.

GIS Seminar: Unequally Capitalized Urban Heat Penalty in the Philadelphia Housing Market (Opens in new tab/window)
OnlineCollege of DesignAdditional details
Rapid urban growth and rising global temperatures have made extreme heat a growing problem in cities, and the burden is not shared equally. Low‑income and otherwise vulnerable communities are often the most affected. While many studies have shown that parks, trees, and other green features can increase property values — a benefit sometimes called the “green premium” — far less attention has been paid to the downside of urban heat.
This “urban heat penalty” refers to how exposure to extreme heat can lower home values. Understanding this issue matters because housing markets may quietly discount homes in hotter, underserved neighborhoods, reinforcing existing social and environmental inequalities.
In this presentation, Meen Wook Juna will share the findings of a study focused on the relationship between land surface temperature and housing sales data in Philadelphia from 2015 to 2019. By integrating property transaction records with satellite-derived thermal data and employing multi-level modeling with random intercepts and random slopes, she examined 1) the magnitude of the heat penalty's negative impact on housing prices; 2) the exacerbating role of neighborhood social vulnerability, where heat-induced depreciation is significantly more pronounced in marginalized neighborhoods than in affluent ones; and 3) the financial impact of this penalty, which has increased over time and has grown faster in socially marginalized communities over the study period.
The study findings suggest that housing market dynamics may act as a mechanism of climate injustice, underscoring the urgent need for targeted cooling interventions in socially marginalized neighborhoods.
About the speaker
Meen Wook Jung is a PhD candidate in the city and regional planning section of the Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture, where his research covers the distributive equity of urban heat and green infrastructure for climate justice. He specializes in computational urban microclimate simulation, agent-based modeling, and geographic information systems, and their empirical application to environmental and green infrastructure planning. He holds a master of community and regional planning from Iowa State University and a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea.Part of the Spring 2026 GIS Seminar Series hosted by the Department of Urban Planning and Development, this seminar is open to all Iowa State students, faculty, and staff. Contact Professor Monica Haddad, haddad@iastate.edu, to express interest in attending and to receive the link to the online event.

An International Sexual Predator Ring Exposed: How ISU PD Cracked the Case (Opens in new tab/window)
Sun Room, Memorial UnionLectures ProgramAdditional details
Panel: Chief Michael Newton and Officer Kami Feld
An ISU True Crime Series EventAn Iowa State student's call for help back in 2020 led Iowa State University Police down a long and often disturbing path that more than four years later resulted in federal indictments for a ring of neo-Nazi sexual predators accused of preying on young women – many of them minors – from around the world. Join us for a discussion about ISU PD's role in the investigation as well as other incidents, including swatting calls, that the police handle on campus.
Officer Kami Feld has been with the ISU Police Department since 2016. She is a second-generation law enforcement officer who holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology. Since starting with ISUPD, she has served as both a patrol officer and a detective. Her motivation and passion centers on helping and supporting survivors of violence as well as confronting and stopping child sexual exploitation. She is an active member of the Story County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the State of Iowa’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Her reputation and skill set regarding crimes against children investigations have attracted praise and requests for assistance from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Feld has received both meritorious and excellent service commendations for her work combatting child exploitation.
Dr. Michael R. Newton serves as the Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police at ISU, leading the Department of Public Safety. Since joining ISU in 2017, he has focused on community engagement, threat assessment, and innovative approaches to campus safety. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the ISU Demonstration Safety Team, helping ensure safety and coordination during campus demonstrations and large events. A recognized leader in crisis intervention and community policing, Dr. Newton has received multiple NAMI awards for his work in mental health advocacy. Under his leadership, the ISU Police Department earned the IACLEA Innovations in Community-Oriented Policing Award for its community engagement efforts. He holds an associate degree in criminal justice with a certificate in psychology, a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and a Ph.D. focused on leadership and emotional intelligence in law enforcement.
