  • 25th Annual Postcard Print Exchange Exhibition: Déjà Vu, Dreams, and Childhood Memories (Opens in new tab/window)

Gallery 181, College of Design 715 Bissell Road, Ames, IA, United States
    College of Design
    Additional details

The Iowa State University Print Society will host "Déjà Vu, Dreams, and Childhood Memories: 25th Annual International Postcard Print Exchange Exhibition and Silent Auction" from Nov. 17–20 in Gallery 181 at the ISU College of Design. The show features postcard prints from the United States, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, and South Korea. Hours are 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. A closing reception will be from 5–7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20.

The project began in late 2024 when printmakers from around the world were invited to send 13 original, identical, 4"x6" prints to the University Print Society. This year’s theme resulted in varied responses from individuals across the country and around the world. The club was delighted to see many varied interpretations of the theme, from nostalgic memories to whimsical dreams, and beyond!

Eligible methods included any editionable printmaking technique (woodcuts, litho, intaglio, relief, photography, silkscreen, digital printmaking, etc.) Prints were to be stamped and mailed separately as postcards, so they would bear the markings of travel and the postal service.

Every artist who submitted prints received 12 different prints from other artists in return (hence the "exchange"). The University Print Society kept one print from each artist for its own collection. These are the prints that are on display as a part of the exhibition and available for bid in the silent auction. Additional postcards from past exchanges are included as well.
    Silent Auction
All prints on display as a part of this exhibition are for sale through a bidding process, which is described in the gallery. This is a great opportunity to collect interesting pieces of art or to purchase unusual gifts for friends and family, and help a great cause. Proceeds will help fund student club activities, such as hosting visiting artists, traveling to conferences, and supplying on-campus printmaking workshops.

Bidding continues through the closing reception and ends at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20. Winners will be notified by e-mail and arrangements will be made for them to pick up the prints after Thanksgiving.

    Film Screening: Panel Q&A
Through interviews with farmers, ranchers, scientists, and other experts in agriculture and environmental science, "World Without Cows" delves into the complex and often-surprising ways cows impact our world. This compelling exploration is led by two award-winning journalists who now work in agriculture. The filmmakers traveled to more than 40 global locations to examine the cultural and economic significance of cows, their role in nourishing the world, and their impact on climate — and to answer the question, “Are we better off in a world without cows?”

The post-screening panel will be moderated by Brett Steinocker; panelists include Clark Wolf, past chair of the Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture and professor of Philosophy and Political Science at Iowa State; Rodrigo Tarte, associate professor of Animal Science and director of Certificate Studies in Meat Science at Iowa State; and Casey Anderson, director of Industry Relations for the Iowa Beef Industry Council.

    2630 Memorial Union
    Lectures Program
    Additional details

    Speaker: Charles Chaffin
In this talk, Dr. Charles Chaffin explores why many of us set goals that don’t truly reflect who we are … and what to do about it. Drawing on psychology and neuroscience, he walks through each stage of the goal process: from formation to goal-setting, and from achievement to what comes next. The discussion challenges conventional notions of success and retirement, questioning whether the “finish line” is really an ending or the beginning of something new. Through research and real-world examples, Dr. Chaffin invites audiences to rethink how goals can foster growth, fulfillment, and purpose across all stages of life.

Dr. Charles Chaffin is a writer, consultant, coach, and educator specializing in financial psychology, goal-setting, and the intersection of industry with educational and cognitive psychology. He co-founded the Money & Risk Inventory™ (MRI™), a tool used globally to assess financial psychology and risk comfort, and developed the Psychology of Financial Planning Specialist™ program, adopted by thousands of advisors and students across 15 countries. As a coach and facilitator, he works with financial professionals and organizations to improve decision-making and client engagement. Dr. Chaffin is Professor of Practice at Iowa State University and author of "The Goal Standard" (available November 28, 2025).

The University Book Store will be onsite selling "The Goal Standard" and "Numb" at the event.

  • The Driving Factor? Exploring Parental Influence in Career Choices (Opens in new tab/window)

    2630 Memorial Union
    Lectures Program
    Additional details

    Speaker: Joseph Ramstad
Part of the ISU Research Showcase series.

A parent has a significant impact on their children in many ways, including the careers they choose to pursue. Joe Ramstad's research explores the role parents perceive themselves having in their children's lives, and to call attention to additional resources or supports that can help parents in most effectively guiding their children in this important life decision. Whether you are currently a parent, will become a parent, or can recall the influence of your family on your career, this presentation has implications for everyone.

Joe Ramstad is a PhD candidate in the Agricultural Education and Studies Department, with a focus in agricultural education teacher preparation. He taught high school agricultural education for 5 years in Minnesota, and found a great enthusiasm for helping support future teachers and first year teachers. K-12 agricultural educators must find ways to balance several areas of their program, and given today's challenges with teacher attrition, this emerging topic is of importance. Joe's primary research focuses on how we can best equip these educators and their programs with tools and resources so they can remain strong within the profession and their communities. As a first-generation college student himself, he has found great enthusiasm in uncovering this important area of research and is excited to continue share research-supported resources and with future teachers, so they are prepared to have robust, industry-validated experiences for K-12 students and stakeholders. He is also interested in research focusing on student experiential learning and career preparation. Outside of school, Joe enjoys spending time outside, BBQing, kayaking, and traveling.

This lecture recording can be found on the Available Recordings page approximately two business days after the event and will remain accessible for three weeks.
